Camping in the fall can be fun. Many times we are too busy with school starting and other late summer chores that we don’t think about going out in our RV in the Fall. Whether you venture up to New England to see the fall colors or you go down south to escape the coming winter the fall is a good time to think about your Camper/RV. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also a beautiful place to camp in the fall.
Fall maintenance should include flushing out the Gray and Black water system with a quality sewer product. Treating the Fresh water system with a quality water treatment. We must also check the electrical system and battery to make sure that they are charging properly. If you are going on the road be sure and check the lights and tires. All of these things are part of normal maintenance that we sometimes neglect during the busy summer months.
Dress in layers and Pack moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof or waterproof outer jacket. Fall Weather can be unpredictable so be prepared. Arrive early and set up your camp before dark because fall sunsets happen fast. Cool fall evenings are great for sleeping but setting up a campsite after dark can be a challenge. Manage your campfires because clear dry leaves and pine needles at least 15 feet away from your fire ring. Fire risk increases in the fall because of falling leaves so be careful with the campfire.
Insulate from the ground if you are sleeping in a tent use a sleeping pad with an R-value of 4 or higher to block cold ground temperatures. Layer for bed regardless of where you sleep wear dry thermal layers and a beanie, but avoid over-layering inside your sleeping bag to prevent sweat. Protect your electronics and keep phones and power banks inside your camper at night so the cold air does not drain the batteries.
